You might be surprised to learn how some of the simplest tricks can make any painting job look far more amazing. Sand Flaws Away
For walls with a smoother texture, or no texture at all, the pros often use a sander to smooth away, hide, or remove flaws such as divots or bumps on the walls or ceiling. Joint compounds are used to fill in holes or cracks. Sometimes these repairs also create flaws in the walls. Again, the pros will use a fine grain sand paper to smooth these patches down.
Tinted Primer
Pros repair walls with joint compound and blend the repaired area with the wall’s current texture. However, joint compound–or even when a wall or ceiling gets a skim coat–the materials used can dry the wall in those areas and suck the moisture out of the paint. This results in dual patches. Before painting walls with these types of repairs the pros will use a tinted primer first. Instead of using a white primer the pros use a gray or tinted primer which hydrates and prevents these dual patches from showing.
Sealing Painter Tape
Everyone uses painters tape to protect the seams of the areas you don’t want paint to bleed or run on. However often when we pull the painters tape away, our hearts are filled with disappointment and grief to see that the paint has bled underneath the painter tape. To prevent this problem, professionals use a putty knife to press and seal the tape down tighter preventing the paint from bleeding underneath the tape.
Prevent Overlapping Marks
Professional painters never leave behind brush strokes or overlapping marks. The question is how are they doing that? The answer is simple. Pros often mix a paint extender (also called a paint conditioner) into the paint they are using. Paint conditioners do two things. One, it slows down the drying process which helps the painter put the paint on evenly. The second thing paint conditioners do is level out the brush strokes which also eliminates the overlapping issue.
Paint One Wall at a Time
Another way to insure each wall blends together and looks flawless at the end is that you will want to do the trim work and roll the paint on one wall at a time. Most people will do all the trim work in a room then go back and roll the paint on. This creates overlapping marks even with a paint conditioner. If the trim paint dries before you roll the rest of the paint on the wall, you get the overlapping marks once again. Trim and paint one wall at a time for the best results.
