Having a deck to spend long summer nights with friends and family is always a great addition to any home. A popular material used in residential decking is redwood. The beauty of redwood is unmatched with the deep red tones and beautiful woodgrain of each plank. If you have a redwood deck, it is important that you remember to have it stained and sealed to protect that beautiful wood. Whether you are staining it for the first time, or are having the deck refinished, you will want to pick out the right stain and sealer for it. Bill Engler Painting is here to share some tips to help you choose the right stain for your deck.
How to Select the Right Stain for Your Deck
Not only will choosing the right stain for your deck have a large impact on how it looks, but you will also be choosing the protective coating that protects the planks against damage from the elements. There are a few different options to consider.
– Transparent Deck Stain: If you are someone who likes the natural beauty of the wood and would prefer to see it rather than cover it with stain, transparent deck stain is for you. However, when you choose this one, you have to remember that it will also offer the least amount of protection against UV rays. When you choose this stain, you just have to understand that you will have to stain the deck more often.
– Semi-Transparent Deck Stain: For someone who wants to have plenty of protection for their redwood deck without sacrificing the beautiful wood grain, semi-transparent often offers the best of both worlds. There is great UV and moisture protection while still allowing the natural wood to peak through. There is some pigment in the stain as well for those that like the look of a different color.
– Solid Deck Stain: When you choose a solid deck stain, it is a similar look to paint. You will have full coverage on your deck and maximum protection against the elements. This type of stain is a good option if your deck has a lot of imperfections on its surface as well. While this may seem like it would be a bulletproof option, solid deck stains tend to crack and peel. This is especially a problem in areas that receive heavy foot traffic. Another thing to consider with the solid deck stain is that prepping the surface to refinish the stain is more intensive than other deck stains.
